Just about to take the plunge and change our oil rayburn for a heatranger 355 sfw, as we have a huge pile of wood from some countryside stewardship work. I've been shopping around and haggling and i've got it down to £3575 inc vat and delivery with a £500 off nfu voucher.

Anyone bought one cheaper or got a better alternative? this poor farmer :001_rolleyes: doesn't want to spend more than he's got to.

Not bought a new one one but did research online awhile ago, there is a small range of alternative brands to the rayburn:

La Nordica: or broseley

Thermo Suprema is cheaper more kw too boiler, weighs less though so dunno about build quality?

See:

https://www.fireplaceproducts.co.uk/wood-multifuel-central-heating-boiler-cookers/la-nordica-thermo-suprema-18.5-dsa-wood-boiler-cooker/

Esse:

About same price

De Manincor (e.g EK90)

More expensive probably, looks high quality, has some extra high tech things like thermostatic regulator primary air, for an automatic control of combustion.

Wamsler 900:

Country Stoves-Wamsler900 Series Central Heating CookerStoves, UK & Ireland

thanks. looked at most of them. little concerned about getting what you pay for from some of the cheaper stoves and not having the metal in them.

I'd kind of got down to the rayburn or stanley donard 60. now they are about the same price thinking the rayburn will hold it's value best and i can get plenty of spares easily/cheaply. going by a few nice ones sold on flea bay recently i think new is looking very attractive. because it's a farmhouse/office will claim at least some vat back.

we have a 15 year old bungalow which is insulated well and have 8 rads in total although we only want to run 5 in the bedrooms and bathroom which are the other end from the kitchen where the rayburn will be and lounge where our villager woodburner is. so hopefully it should be fine.

we have a oil boiler which we will leave in as a back up, as like the oil rayburn is it's pretty much worthless. I just dispise buying oil these days and haven't used the rayburn or central heating for 4 months in the last 2 years. skinflint

going to put in a 300l thermal store to link the two up.

Hi John. you are right if it is wood only and buy/have installed by a approved fitter you can have the vat at 5%. we would like the option of using some coal if the need ever arises hence the 355sfw over the 345w which is wood only. the vat doesn't worry me, because of course it will be warming the water for milk to feed the calves won't it. hence the vat reclaim!!

It will actually make it less than £3k. apart from keeping us warmer it should save some leccy too i hope.

I just converted my oil fired rayburn to solid fuel this week. All in it cost me about €200, did the work myself.I was being quoted an upgraded reconditioned solid fuel at about 4k.Should have done it years ago:001_rolleyes:

When we got our Esse there was a fiddle on the VAT. The cental heating version had Vat at 5% whereas the only DHW version had VAT at 20%. Obviously we got the CH version as it was hundreds of pounds cheaper even though the net price was more expensive. I dont know whether the loophole still exists.

As an Esse cooker dealer I ran this past the VAT inspector a couple or three years ago.

They stated that after talking to Esse that the product is primarily a cooker that heats water as a secondary function, therefore VAT should be charged as a cooker (20%) as opposed to a dedicated boiler at 5%. If the dealer charged 5% and a VAT inspector decides on an inspection that he should have charged 20% he will have to pay the additional tax and a fine on top.

I have heard that this MAY recently have been reviewed, there was something about this in an Esse dealer mail shot recently, its one of the things I need to investigate in the new year.
