I've taken down a Dawn Redwood and because of the relative rarity of the tree, there seems to be little advice available on whether it is suitable to burn in a fireplace. Some say it will coat the chimney with creosote like a pine would, others say it burns well with a nice crackle. Any advice? Many thanks.

it's wood, it burns.

it may spit on an open fire though?

it is as you say a fairly rare tree and i would be interested in some of the timber. what size was the tree and what size is it currently cut into?

All woods burns once seasoned and free wood burns nicely, as a commercial firewood most want the premium stuff - Ash,Oak,Beech

When it is well seasoned it becomes very light in weight, it is easily split and makes excellent kindling. It burns very quickly and does not produce the same level of creosote as pine if properly seasoned. It has a beautiful red colour and smells great when cutting and splitting. It may spit a little on an open fire but nowhere as near as much as larch.

Hope this answers your query.

Thanks for the replies. :001_smile:

I realise it will burn when seasoned, but my concerns are:

a) Whether it will spit like pine.

b) Whether it will coat the chimney with 'creosote', again like pine.

Where is the tree, or where are you trying to get rid of it from?
