wood wasp i reckon

I was admiring a few Biro pen sized holes in the softwood I was splitting last week, again it had been lying 2 or 3 years, most impressive tunnelling work.

And yon monster of a Hornet=Woodwasp I observed and mentioned on here.

As my ould Uncle Tony would likely have commented;

"I am glad she is sticking her boyo into dead trees an not my arse instead"

Cheers chaps, I'm going with the wood wasp thing (even though I'm not sure) but I found a few more today and watched them wriggling about.

 

Looked like they had a wasp type arse and six legs, how many legs does a wasp have?

 

Very interesting to watch close up, they were shitting out perfect little cylindrical wood pellets!

 

If they could produce bigger ones I could sell them as processed logs.

Another vote for wood wasp here. They love spruce. IF you gonna eat them, don't go native - fry them as you would shrimp. If there not enough to make a side dish, bulk out with woodlice. Yum.
