I'd say fell and treat the stumps is the only option there Matt, especially for the 1st picture. The trees are just too close.

How's things anyway mate ?

Think I will advise the customer to fell the 2 clumps, like you say there really isn't another option! It seems a bit of a no brainer now but the customer really wanted to keep them.. struggling to think of another tree to replant that would thrive in a coastal location that isn't sycamore. Garden is less than half mile from west facing bit of coast you see..
