This is the best solution in my opinion - assuming this is a garden wall or similar...

 

 

Close to where I work there are examples of a classic (although failed) and contemporary version of voids, allowing roots/buttresses to stay unsevered.

Here are the 3 groups of sycamore. 1 is growing right on top of the wall.

and 3 is growing near the wall but not really much of a problem for a long time i think

I'd say fell and treat the stumps is the only option there Matt, especially for the 1st picture. The trees are just too close.

Think I will advise the customer to fell the 2 clumps, like you say there really isn't another option! It seems a bit of a no brainer now but the customer really wanted to keep them.. struggling to think of another tree to replant that would thrive in a coastal location that isn't sycamore. Garden is less than half mile from west facing bit of coast you see..

Id still not suggest a fell, just rebuild the walls as semi-circular alcoves with lintles where appropriate.
