I am not really familiar with that model, but it has been out of production for a goodly while.

What do you want the saw for? If its to work on a daily or even weekly basis, do your fingers a favour and buy a new one with decent AV.

Otherwise, if you want a saw to tinker with or to add to a collection of vintage, its probably a reasonable buy. Parts may be difficult to come by however.

I want it to mill up a 30' length of Spruce and a few other bits of Acacia, doesnt sound like a good idea then. The guys says its a good runner but who knows eh? I will give it a miss thanks for the advice

dont do it...

not enough saw for what you want to use it for,

not ever considered on of stihls best,

parts no longer available from stihl and rare second hand....

if you want a 70cc saw, much better to look out for a 038av/super (or magnum if you can find one) or 044, parts are still available for them and reasonable runners can be had for £150...

for a milling saw, look out for a 075/076, much better suited to milling, not un-common, and can be had for a reasonable sum

get something with a big fuel tank

for that kind of thing i think you need to be looking at 075/76 really or an 070/090 if your only going to use it really infrequently

The 048 was plagued with problems or so they say .Evidently the early ones were held together with only 4 case bolts and they were slotted head screws .The later ones used torx head and that pretty much fixed the problem which was case leaks .

I have two of them and they have plenty of power but lack a bit in speed as compaired to say an 046 .Parts however are rare especially the SEM ignition moduals .They used both a Bosc system as well as the SEM type .They are not interchangable either . The air filters are all but nonexistant also .

If I recall correctly I have less than $100 US funds in either of them if that means anything .
