I have just applied to build a bund along the side of my field and the motorway. I have proposed the bund be 2.5m high and 45degree slope planted with native hedging plants. Hawthorn etc etc.

The council planning people have come back and said nothing will grow on a 45 degree slope and it should be reduced to 33 degrees. I have seen thousands of hedge plants growing on slopes during my career however is there any fact to back up either side other than I take lots of photos of hedge plants growing on banks?

Devon banks can be steep.

Or could you terrace strips every so often flat for planting or even leaning back to bund to catch water.

It's a bit like the old 6 hedge plants to a metre. Supposed to be stock proof. Very few hedges are used as sole stock barrier. Many never contain stock. Hedges that are laid if 6 plants survived per meter would be thinned.

But the above simple solution will probably be less hassle. Green it up quick with clover or something not too competitive to blend away the details of engineering.

Oh,I've seen hawthorn growing out the side of a brick house wall. 90deg

agree to do 33. Then do 45 anyway. Who is going to check it ?

It's the way you have to work with the planning system.

There's your answer. Job justification from the planners
