Has anyone else not been paid for doing sub-contract work.

Yes. It's a difficult issue, but you need to be hard about it and refuse further works until full payment. As an employer I try and pay my guys straight away. When I was a subby I had a few guys that were slow and one that tried to get away without paying. I had to resort to small claims for one.

Had plenty of slow payers in the past, have always been paid eventually though

As a subby climber I was always paid daily or on a friday night, never any issues. But most of that work was domestic.

 

Is it a case that you are not going to be paid or just that they're slow to pay you? Cash flow can be a nightmare. Have you spoke to the people who owe you? It might be that they are having cash flow problems and are simply aren't get the money in themselves.

 

I know it don't help you - having your own bills, but lots of companies are in the same boat.

I used to work for a company, who subbed to a bigger company, who subbed to the client. by the time the invoices crawled there way to the top, and payment slugged its way to me, it took 6 months. by the time I got paid I had near forgotten about it, was a nice "surprise" once it graced my bank account! Was like a late late late xmas present

You are right in the fact that cash flow can be a nightmare. I am always upfront with subbies. If I cant pay them when they are due to be paid I let them know in advance. Therefore they can plan in advance. It helps everyone to be honest and up-front.

ive used money claim online which replaces small claims. He's filed a defence so I assume he's claiming either I wasn't there or he's already paid me in cash. The only defence I have is that I can prove I was there and I can prove he's not paid me into my bank. What will the court do if he's says I've paid him cash! Feel pretty angry because it's cost me to help this guy out because his groundsman was ill. The only solution I can think of is parking across his drive in the morning and reminding him he owes me.

Does he usually pay in cash or bank?? surely if paid in cash there would be a paid invoice given for his books. But I think I paid him in cash is a crap defense tbh. You'll get to see his defense anyway.

I only worked for him on this one occasion and yes I agree I paid him cash is a crap defence and if he'd paid me why the hell would I talk him to court, unless I was a psycho!
