Ride on mower vs compact tractor?

I'm fairly mechanically competent (given time and the internet) but I've never worked on a tractor before. And wouldn't really know how to check if I was buying a good one - but I suppose if the engine starts from cold, runs with power and without smoke, all the gears engage, the PTO spins, the 3 point linkage lifts, the brakes work - it can't be too bad?

I'm aiming for an older tractor, both because of my budget and because they're simpler. Suppose I could spend a bit more in order to get a better machine, but I have seen reasonable looking tractors within my budget.

Parts for small Kubota and John deere are expensive, hard to justify if you are only doing an acre, commercial ride on's like JD X595 have rear pto (option) and Cat 0 lifting arms,

Hi Sandspider, I have got a very tidy little Kubota b5100 for sale if you are interested, it has a 4ft mowing deck. The 3pl and pto have never been used! Near Chepstow.

from my experence a mid deck mower mounted on a compact tractor couldnt cut as low as a purpose built ride on mower. depends on what finish you want on the best lawns. theres not one machine that will do it all, a compact tractor would be very close though.

Our Iseki has an underneath mounted pto. It's always been an irritation, recently it started to leak the trans oil. I took it off as a unit and made a plate to replace it. Gained 150mm ground clearance so won't be grounding it anymore. Plus when ploughing with it the pto rubbed the ridge and hindered positive traction.

 

 

If you do get a compact you can always hire rotavator or other kit as you need without the dealer having to deliver the full kit.
