Do what Felix said. APF is THE place to buy, especially for a newbie.

All the manufacturers will be represented and there will be dealers a plenty to compare prices.

There will be a great deal of kit there that you didn't even know existed, much less couldn't live without so take a card with you.

Dont take a card with you, take a certain amount of cash with you to spend on kit and once its gone its gone

Never take a card with you to buy kit...you'll max it out,i did...its a hard lesson...be warned!

The courses I'm doing have their own kit, the only reason I'm looking at this point is that I know a retired guy who is now a consultant who's offered to teach me a bit of the basics beforehand on some of his trees and I need it for that. I realise I'll look abit stupid turning up with my own stuff but it can't really be helped! Thanks for the advice though!

When I did my climbing course I had almost enough stuff for two and lots of shiny toys. I like to be prepared and had been shopping around eBay and the online places. I've found out some of the stuff I like and what I didn't I've sold on and changed it for other kit.

I might have to go to the APF for a look round
