My mum collects medals from WW1 and try's to reunite groups that were split by grandkids etc. She visits the war graves annually so it's quite close to our hearts.

She has medals to Thomas Agar-Robartes of Lanydrock house in Cornwall. They're currently on extended loan to the house as part of their centenary display.

That brings me to another loss of the war, the large houses.

The younger generation died in the war so the the lords had no one to pass on the estate, also there wasn't the people required to be 'in service' as footmen etc. The country lost many fine houses and associated history in the following years.

Sure I read somewhere that as many as 30 a month were being pulled down ,Manor houses that is .

Not only did we lose our youth ,but also their inheritance .

My wife read very interesting book called "singled out"

 

Everybody of my generation ( I'm 62) had loads of maiden aunts - this was because the boys they should have married were slaughtered in the trenches.....

 

So for pretty much every guy killed there was a girl who never got to have a family.....

 

It's not something we ever thought about as kids, everybody had a maiden aunt or two .......sobering thought though ......
