Is ash not good to go straight away?

 

No. You often hear people say ash will burn green but I would add only if you have to. IIRC, felled when it's dormant, it'll have a moisture content between 30 - 45%, less than many other woods but some stove manufactures state 20%, some higher, so it will need some seasoning. How much would depend on a number of factors.

No, fresh cut in winter it has a MC of about 35%, that will burn but not well. It will give poor heat and be depositing excess soot and tar into the flue.

 

If it was felled last winter I doubt it will be ready by Sept but might be OK by January.
