MS261 query

No doubt there is an issue its just that the bearing is the same one that is fitted to a vast range of saws.

The issue as far as I know is the clutch drum, this is causing the bearing to fail, trash the oil pump etc rather than the bearing being at fault. As you say more often than not the oil pump arm is broken.

The drums on the 261 seems to wear extremely fast. I have had ms260's in that must have done thousands of hours on the same bearing and hundreds on the same drum.

Ive just been fitting the ms260 dums and have had no return issues as of yet

I wouldn't discount that heat may be a factor as well, as the inboard clutch design means that area will be hotter than with an outboard. It hardly is the main cause though, just another contributing factor.

As Stihl obviously still is in denial about this issue, I guess the only way to live with those saws is to keep a supply of the involved parts around - remember that they are wear items in the first place.

What is odd is that this never is a topic on any of the several other saw forums that I am on....

Is it not the end of the crank that has been ground slightly oval causing the bearing to eventually fail ?

I asked about the interchangeability of 260/261 drums a few weeks ago but unfortunately got no reply ( they seemed identical to me ) . Do you use Stihl drums or the Oregon equivalent ?

Have used both but the last two I used the oregon drum and bearing

I will be getting some of those metal cage bearings though as suggested by Spud

Thanks for reply Mark. I have been looking for metal cage bearings as well but all the sellers at the moment seem to be selling plastic ones. I would appreciate a heads up from anyone finding metal caged bearings.
