eating honey fungus

Anybody eaten honey fungus????? I've just been reading that it is highly sought after in italy where they use it as an antipasto or cooked in pasta!!!!

 

I'm all for foraging for free food so wondered what it was like.

They are ok, depends which one as there are seveal flavors out there, Five distinct species in Europe our more common Mellea is ok when very young, the Italian have a differnt one I think but then again they lust after all sorts of odd things...

Hi Sean. I was talking to Jane mccall who is one of the contributors in the living woods magazine she writes on wild foods. I asked her about the honey fungus and she said it is good to eat but it is the same as chicken of the woods it wants to be young and fresh you do not want to be eating old ones:001_smile:

 

She also agreed with me about my Grifola frondosa she said you will find it starts to come out now we have had some rain:thumbup1:
