I don't know how vibration levels are recorded - or even if they are. I would imagine all new machines have to meet a certain standard though. I own 4 of the Makita blowers and all I can say is that you don't notice them vibrating to a point that they are going to affect your hands.

 

Blowers (currently) are one of the worst pieces of kit for vibration,(except for 090s) but tbh, how long do you use them?

Yep they are. I have a pair of those anti vibe gloves to wear when using my BG85, but as you say I tend to use mine as little as possible

Second that! It is a lovely piece of kit, makes clearing up much quicker and provides no excuse for not tidying up thoroughly. Takes a delicate touch, though, in small areas as it is so powerful.

Also, anti-vib gloves do not work as they are meant for different types of vibration.

 

I know these things as I attended a seminar when I worked for a large contractor, and we had to fill in sheets every week detailing our daily trigger time on each tool.

Employers have a legal duty to the health and safety of employees. Remember the compensation claims of the miners for white finger?

 

Well large employers don't want arborists turning around in years to come and suing for compensation, The kit we use at work is labeled with the amount of time it can be used daily, We also log our hrs on Vibration sheets as well as having medicals annually.

 

It may seem stupid but the company can are covering their backs from compensation claims also its worth bearing in mind the damage vibrating tools can do to your body. I know one forester who is unable to work hos white finger is so bad. Infact last I heard the poor so and so was struggling to hold a mug of tea!

Don't you realise that the only reason there are so many H&S regs in this country is to provide jobs for knob heads in government.

Thats your opinion and your more than welcome to it, however,

 

Do You have white finger?! I DO Im 28 I developed it from using an 1" air gun all day every day for 3 yrs as an apprentice, I didn;t know any better and my one man band employer had no H&S full stop even though he was required to by law. I now suffer from circulation problems, tingling fingers and very painful fingers in the winter months.

 

I'm now in a situation where I have to be carefull with vibration levels otherwise I'll make it worse. I can't do anything about the damage thats been done, but I can limit any further damage by being careful.

 

I find it really sickening that several members on here rubbish all the H&S and other rules and regs as a whole without looking at the bigger picture. I just hope none of you employ young people and end up causing them long term health issues. If you do hopefully they will sue for compensation. Perhaps then the macho we cann climb anything run anything flaunt the law attitude may change.
