carving / milling project

Recommended Posts

After years of saying i'm going to try both, i now have an idea for a simple project.

First of all is turkey oak ok for carving. I have access to a large lump of it. (It has been down at least 4 years, just need to cut a block off it, its approx 2ft dia) Out of it i would like to mill and carve an ice cream van, but also have the back hollowed out to be able to use as a planter. Does this make sense ?

If so any guidance on how to go about it would be greatly appreciated. :001_smile:

thanks

Hi Harvey,

Turkey oak won't last very long outdoors so not sure on the condition of your log if its been on the ground for four years.

However, if its been stored well, not directly in contact with the ground it may be suitable but will need lots of preservative to keep the elements at bay.

Cheers, Simon

Hi all, slight derail from the ice cream van, but is anyone still making (or know where i can get them from), those die grinding attachments for burning eyes into animals. Have been looking at old threads but the only person (norfolkngood) doesnt appear to post anymore.

Any ideas ?

Gustharts do them! Yeah I was surprised too. A glimmer of carving light in this back woods country we inhabit! 😛

Wisewood has messaged me, cheers Si :) I do produce eye tools to order, I have a few on back order right now due to personal issues but can take further orders if you can wait a couple of weeks for delivery?

I must put a picture and explination of how to use the tools on my website as there is no mention of them there at all.

Have you a particular base vehicle in mind?As the membership secretary for the Bedford CF Club,I can get hold of some pics & measurements as a guide. There might even be a member close to you.I'd have to check the database for that though.
