Are tree protectors bio-degradable? there is a piece planted near me about ten years ago which has not seen much maintenance and the tree protectors have all blown off and piled up, then dogs pick them up, chew them and scatter the bits about which doesn't look very good.

Should I be concerned or just ignore it.

They look like Tubex, and yes, they are meant to be degradable, although it does take some time and if left unmanaged like in your picture, they can be an eyesore.

Is this land anything to do with you? Could you organise a 'friends of... group' to arrange a bit of a tidy up?

No, nothing to do with me, just have a walk round sometimes and it does look bad, especially when dogs drag the sleeves out and drop chewed off bits about.

It looks to me as though they've been removed and originally piled up but forgotten about, and then they've blown from the heaps.

Some places will accept them for recycling too; we found that dumpy bags was the best way of collecting them up and transporting them with the handles tied together.

I understand that they degrade in sunlight. However that just means that they just disintegrate into smaller pieces of plastic.

I'm still using some shelters that were originally used in 1986.... Anyone else remember when the tree shelters were that pink colour?
