Pollarding and Alder yes or no?

They react well to topping in the sense that they come back strongly, whether one wants to look at that is often a matter of personal choice, often it's only other tree blokes who react with horror at the sight of a topped tree.

I agree though "out or nothing" is prolly best for Alder

 

 

Yeah I'll see what they want as an end game but light reductions seem to work alright in some situations.

Good point made, depends on what 'react' we are referring too. They react well to topping from a regrowth sense, I was coming from a decay a dysfunction point of veiw. Every topped Alder iv come across has had bad decay at the pruning points (similar too birch). With quick regrowth and a lack of follow up management makes them a bad tree to top IMO unless the client understands the future pruning required and if that's what they want.
