Wood chip

Does anyone burn wood chip; if so how much do you burn per month or year, and what size building are you heating.

And approx what chip volume does a cubic meter of solid timber produce ?

I have been asked to supply timber for chipping, and volume wanted seems very low, hence the questions

1 ton makes 3 to 4 cube of chip. We heat our drying shed with chip so it doesn't really compare to anything else but it's a 199kw boiler and uses 2 cube a day depending how much we're drying.

A 100kw boiler for 2 houses I would hazard a guess at 10 cube a week.

The biggest issue with chip is drying it.

We burn a few thousand tonnes per year but building size wouldn't be of use to you I suspect. As gdh says 1 dry tonne (which will be over a cubic metre of timber ) produces almost 4 cube of chip. A cubic metre of solid timber will produce 2 to 3 cube of chip for us. Seasoned wood that is 20% will produce approx 4 kWh assuming you have an efficient boiler. Ours is 92%

We dry in the round then chip so just sun and wind to dry it. We also chip slab wood which dries quickly to sub 20%

Cheers for the replys, i am guessing that the consultant has grossly underestimated the amount of chip required.

It is for two 60-250kw boilers to heat eight houses, and dry round wood for chip and logs.

From "The Woodfuels Handbook"

1 Cu M Stacked Round 1metre Logs = 1.75 cu m G30 Chips

or = 2.1 cu m G50 Chips

Some of these consultants want a bit of watching, many are deeply experienced with double glazing.

It's all guesswork until you've done a year to be honest. I would guess at 5-10 tons a week, up to 15 if it's freezing. If they're not planning on drying the chip the logs will need to be really dry. Less than 15% ideally. 25% is the maximum on the inside of a freshly split log if you want the chip to burn.
