This may be daft (my ideas often are) but isn't pittosporum very dense/hard?

 

Maybe worth considering??? As a non wood turning guy there may be issues I am unaware of.

if it grows to 2-3' diameter that i can have milled and there is a ready supply of the timber then yes.

 

sadly i've never come across a single specimen and am still looking for a sample to send to america.

This is probably the most common variety; actually very common as a garden shrub but 2' across...? I've not seen one that size. I think you'd need to go to NZ for one of those.
