You can issue a 7day letter, there are reputable online companies/solicitors that specialise in this kind of thing not expensive at all normally jolts them into paying I will check who we use and let you know if it is of any interest.

If the maintenance guy was who you usually dealt with, it was perfectly reasonable for you to assume the contract was authorised. In addition, the duty manager reconfirmed the contract by allowing you to perform the job(known as acceptance by course of conduct). I would go down the Small Claims route with a decent expectation of success.

i did it for a £150 worth of logs cost them ,£275 in the end £25 the £100 for the bailifes

Very true, Johny. Very important to remember to add on your reasonable expenses to the original debt.

Just make sure you have all the relevant evidence at your fingertips if it actually goes to court. The most important thing you will need to prove is the previous pattern of doing business, ie the maintenance man being your point of contact and his authorising previous work. Remember that you are in a civil court and so you only need to prove your case on the balance of probability rather than beyond all reasonable doubt as in a criminal case. If it goes to court, don't try to be Rumpole of the Bailey but do make sure you are well organised and respectful to the court. Good luck!
