Inconsistent LOLER inspections.

I'm not trying to spur an argument as these types of threads always do, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it as my friend forked out quite alot of dollar to replace equipment.

 

It might not be the response you were looking for I suspect Bumble is correct. Spring missing is a modification from the manufactures spec which carries CE certification. With a mod the CE certification is lost and kit shouldnt be used.

So LOLER is a massive gray area. I just find it a bit frustrating that we have to fork out money every 6months to be inspected, when there are inconsistencies. I know it's a requirement and I stick to it.

 

I mean really when you are getting inspected, only you know what your kit has been through?

I used to do inspections for a company & one year I failed at least half a dozen krabs. I was not impressed that he put them back into service with his lads & submitted them again for me to re-fail next time around.

As others have said a rope grab minus the wire is a fail under LOLER and would also not be acceptable under PUWER

No it isn't, an item can be submitted for inspection as often as the owner choses, the inspection is a service they are paying for, they can submit an item as often as they like.

The periodic thorough inspection is the same as an MOT in that its only valid at the time of test. After that its the daily and weekly user inspections that ensure kit remains in serviceable condition.

As loler inspectors we are human, for the record a missing wire inwouldnt have passed it. Ropes are not as clear cut. I may pass a rope someone else would fail, and vice versa. On the loler assessment they have been careful to avoid grey areas. Same as corrosion on an mot it's up to the individual to make a decision, and one that if required they could defend on court

The items I mentioned I put back in were lives of hitch cord that the inspector sad were glazed... Where as I argued it was conifer sap. It was conifer sap as it washed off.

as loler inspectors They are to inspect as presented eg if Karabiner clogged with sap and sawdust and gate does not return etc Then FAIL same as Ropes and hitches if they looked GLAZED heat damaged this could be dried on sap etc but the Inspector will inspect as presented if you knew there was sap on ropes hitches perhaps a quick wash prior to inspection , and if you had just done a Sappy Tree then clean as soon as after , i Clean my ropes when Sap etc gets on them and give Karabiners quick blow out with airline sometimes weekly but Always Monthly and a little lub to keep things moving nice
