Tips for changing chain on WP36 processor

Yea we always took the chain, bar and socket off at the same time and put them back on the same. You better get used to taking the chain off it Iain! They do like to go through chains!

 

I take a different view to that one.... The Piranha chains I'm using on it only need sharpening once a day, caveat to this is to not be using dirty wood

Ours came with a 72 link chain on an Iggesund Forest bar. Impossible to change without taking the bar and sprocket off. Changed to a 73 link chain and now it's a two minute job with plenty of scope on the adjuster.

 

I have to agree with bilke_user regarding chain life, we easily get a day between sharps when cutting clean Birch. Oddly enough we have to sharpen more often when we're amongst Sitka.

Thanks again. I'm getting almost 2 days out of it on mixed Larch/ Ash / Beech. Tried fitting old chain back tonight and so much easier. New chains with the new technique are 10 mins versus 60 mins. Result ! This is the only drawback I found with an otherwise excellent machine and now thanks to the advice its now hardly a drawback

I find it easy I leave the sprocket on you need the block off wood

+1 for the piranha chain, fantastic stay sharp quality and at a disposable price I don't even bother sharpening them just stick a new one on every couple of days.

Despite both of us being pretty experienced at sharpening by hand, the processor really seems to favour being sharpened on the grinder jig, probably to do with the associated temperature hardening. 2 chains on rotation now.

 

Sitka goes harder with seasoning, have the same issue when the odd windblow/old one goes through the mobile saw mill.

You sure it's not your sharpening? Only ever do our by hand and never had problems but processors seem more fussy than saws. It's critical you keep the tooth length the same on both sides.

Take my chain off and put it on the 357 with an 18" bar to sharpen it if I have to, but prefer to just change chain for a sharp one then take the dull one home and sharpen on a 6" vice. Never been a fan of grinders for sharpening

I just sharpen mine on a spare bar by hand

It lasts days by hand, weeks by grinder.

Never had issues hand sharpening with the chainsaws, machine seemed more fussy (or we were just putting some real crap through it).
