Hi Guys ,Newbie on here , i have an issue with my 1985 greytop metal brake 61 , its been a good saw of mine for a long time (266XP top end ) anyhoo i recently gave it a bit of a work over , new vibe rubbers ,new oil pump (nothing wrong with the original one ) new clutch and sprocket ,stripped cleaned the carb and rebuilt and it ran as good as ever , while it was apart i found a crack in the clutch cover and the pins on the metal brake were worn and it rattled at idle so i got an original cover and brake off Ebay in very good nick and the part numbers on both covers were identical , however when i fitted the cover the chain brake operated as expected but didn't stop the chain, it was just about scuffing the drum , thought hmm something different here , i refitted the original complete cover and it worked perfectly on the new spur sprocket /drum i bought and the original rim sprocket/drum which i replaced ,so i took it all apart and checked the rocker, spring , everything looked perfect , took out the brake band and compared it to the old worn one (which worked perfect at high rpm's ) and looked the same size , but had a slit in the centre about 3/4 of it length , so i fitted my original old one to the cover i had bought thinking it must be a different band , rebuilt it all and it still doesnt work ,

So question is , does this cover fit other saws with a different size of clutch drum ??even though the part number is the same . i have a spur and rim and both work on the original but neither work with the new one . its very strange as the length of the band where it goes through the spring and is attached to the brake is exactly the same , the length of the threads is the same and the locking screw is the same amount of turns till tight on both bands so i,m at a loss

Anyone had this issue on metal brake saws ??

thanks

Roy

Hi Roy

Is the new side cover one with a steal brake actuation leaver that sits in front of the hoop handle ? if so then its adjustable i believe. The plastic ones are pre set mechanism. There is a Knurled wheel on a thread if its what i have in my mind and there is a set up procedure. You will need to find more on the exact Husqvarna method but that could go some way to answer your issue if the cover you have is all there and functional that is ! Some pics may help to get further .

thanks for the reply , yes it is the metal loop brake and the lever cam part is in front , and it does have the knurled handle butthe securing slotted nut which screws on to the brake band its purpose i believe is to secure it in place , but on the old one if its loosened by a few turns it has the same effect of not grabbing the drum when its activated , thats why i think the dimensions somewhere is different i dd adjust knurled that back and forth , but i think thats there so if the handle loop touches it maybe under high loading in a cut it activates? and has a set gap , which i set it to the original one , it does activate easily by hand and releases easily , but when activated it funtions good and goes with a right sharp crack but the engine revs up easily with just a very slight scuffing noise due to the band just barely touching the drum but its just not grabbing it , i dont have pics just now as i,m working away from home , but i,ll i,ll post some when i,m back

Just as a further reference for you..the most common part Number for the band on the steel handle version is 501 82 02-01 ..first few yrs 78..81 were different but most before the change to plastic seem to be that number. You mentioned a band with a split in it..they seems to be on the saws that have the plastic handle and is pt Number 503 57 22-01 .Food for thought.

Hmm ok , i,ll need to cross ref some part numbers of individual parts then, both covers i have are the alloy ones , but strangely even my original brake band does not work with the new cover/handle so there is some dimesion differences somewhere , i had a look through the manual and it says to adjust the adjusting screw on the band till the chain cannot be turned then back it off 4 turns , i have tightened it fully tight so it runs out of threads unless i can make up a small steel spacer or something to fill the gap , but i dont think that will work as the threaded bit that comes through the hole seats in the mechanism so cannot come through any further , doing my nut in, i,m real mechanical minded and love pulling stuff apart , but something just doesnt add up here :confused1:

Just been through something V similar with a Husqvarna 254xp..in the end was lucky to find the part number on the old broke band and ordered Genuine from the dealer i use for parts. It didn't match the numbers it was supposed to match for the saw or year. Side cases get swapped so its always ..FUN..not !

Through out its life the 61 has had many different brakes, from the sweda matic to the knee link brake, the early bands are adjutable, the very early brake had a square headed adjuster, that was replaced by a screw with round top, the bands are different on both, but you can increse the screw to pull the band harder around the drum, increase the screw clockwise by quarter turn icrements and try after each adjustment, it is important not to over tighten as this will wear the band prematurly, take my advice and fit the later knee link brake, it works better there is no need for any adjustment, and finally there are no spare parts available for the old brakes, so you could be in the same boot very soon, i may have a brake if you are intrested.

yes mine is the Sweda Matic one , and has the round screw , which when fully tightened down till its actually tight and goes no further it still does not let the band grab the drum , i stated in my post somewher ei got a new one from Ebay , i meant a new one to me , it is an original used one , with signs of use , but in very good condition, so it baffles me :cussing:
