Have u thought of tryin just a lid, glasses and some ear plugs mate? I recently went down this road because i was always too hot. i use the petzl altios helmet and it keeps me lovely and cool. Using ear plugs instead of defenders makes a huge difference too.

the petzl straps cut under my ears ferkin pain as my kids bought me one for my birthday, ajusted it to the full still cuts under my ears, plugs no good.i do wear a husky helmet (not allthe time in the tree)but all the time on ground

its the ear muffs that is a killer in the heat, i know where you are coming from andy, but if i dont wear ear defenders for more than 30 secs then they hurt like hell, i tried the ear plugs one day after talking to steve bullman, and the difference was great, but i was climbing through regrowth and my big ears got a bashing, and the plugs had a string on them and kept getting pulled out, so i just went back to muffs, and it has rained here for the last 2 months aswell ha ha. but in the right crown then its a winner

Too true mate,i was recently scrambling through some epicormic on an mature lime tree and i got right peed off how many times they got pulled out!!! Thinking of gettin a custom made pair but just cant decide if im willing to spend all that money?

no point taken ..:biggrin:i shall be wearing a helmet from now on(promise)

andy mate i used to free climb everything, never tied in till i got to the top, its amazing how quick you can climb trees when you are doing it unsafely it was just like you the other day, a big pine with an audience, i got the saw jammed while knocking out a 30plus foot head, it had never happened to me before, i looked round and my wife, and new baby, mum and dad were there. they didnt know what was happening, i hadnt much hinge left as i never thought it would sit back, but the wind just started swirling, that was the longest minute in my life, i managed to get my line strop up another 2 inches, give it a huge shove and luckily the wind dropped and over she went. from that point on i wisened up. i still get in a rage when climbing very safely, even today i was wrestling my way through a big limb full of growth, everything was getting caught up, i was standing on my rope, strop my silky was getting stuck. everything. it took me about 15 mins to do something i would of done in a couple of minutes. but i came home in one peace and that is the main thing buddy:thumbup:

With regards to ear defenders v ear plugs, it has been shown that sound waves can enter the ear from below the actual ear canal and cause damage. This area is not protected by simple ear plugs unlike ear defenders which cover the whole of the ear, therefore protecting this otherwise exposed area. Looks like a choice between sweaty ears now or "speak up, sonny, I can't hear you" in later life.
