Large Cone Splitter vs 40ton + splitter for 3ft/4ft butts

Interested to know the pros and cons of cone splitter vs conventional log splitter for splitting 3ft/4ft diameter knotty hard wood butts.

I know with the cone splitter one has to taken in to consideration the purchase /stroke hire of the large 360 to get the most out of the cone splitter.

Serious amounts of money involved !!! Thanks for any info.

We looked at both a couple of years and went with a splitter. The main reason was we don't have a 360 and a cone splitter big enough to split 3ft diameter plus needs a very high oil flow which we couldn't get from either of our loaders.

 

Also our 40 ton splitter goes 8 ways and you just keep pushing more through whereas a cone splitter takes multiple pushes just to split in half.

 

Of course if you have a 360 then you can get a cone splitter for 4K but a standard splitter with a few extras like ours is more like 16K and a cone splitter would probably be better for bent stuff and could do longer logs.

This cone splitter is happy enough on a 13ton machine and will split down butts 5` in diameter .

It's a Ryetec. We had to make a few changes to the log table because it bent when it flipped up during splitting but other than that it's a really well built machine.

It's 4ft, most the cost is in the ram and we only want to split 3-4 ft pieces for biomass boilers so we thought we'd save a few thousand and go for a short one. Ryetec build to any spec you want.

The split wood is for another customer but we have a 199kw chip boiler.

We'd sell this 30t 2m stroke splitter for sensible offers as since cut back on firewood it doesn't get much use. Hydraulically adjustable 4 way knife, pto driven with own pump and tank.
