saw won't start unless chainbrake off

Have you taken the clutch and sprocket off and cleaned/re-greased/replaced the bearing yet as suggested?

A word of warning, never run the saw with the bar and chain removed, it is very possible for the clutch to un thread on the over run and fly off and can cause serious injury.

As for your problem, make sure the the four bolts up through the crankcase into the cylinder are tight, i have seen these come loose and snap of, this allows the engine to move causing all sorts of issues.

Check the clutch springs and the bearing. Usually a clutch problem if the chain brake is cutting the saw out. I guess everyone has said this though.

yeah found that out one day when I fired up a husky 136, the clutch shattered and sent chunks flying in all directions. I think the inboard clutch is a better design for this reason!
