Log Splitter Prices - why so high in the UK?

Recommended Posts

Can anybody tell me why decent log splitters are so expensive in the UK compared to the continent? As an example, you can get a Krpan CV 18 K in Austria for 2100 euros including VAT. The links here or here show examples. There are other sites that I could point to.

I have checked with HMRC and this means that if you imported into the UK, you would have no import duties or VAT to pay, just the transportation which would cost about £150. I did actually attempt to buy from Germany but the dealer said that the manufacturer would not allow him to deal with UK clients!

All in all, these prices are a heck of lot cheaper than buying over here. I know that the yanks cannot believe what we have to pay. Is this down to a lack of UK manufactured competition or the usual high prices simply because they can get away with it in this country?

Maybe the Kinetic (or Flywheel) type splitters will take hold and give that competition. I guess that all depends on whether their pricing will be real or UK inflated!

The other side of "rip off Britain" is you can charge 100 for a m3 of logs. Bet you can't do that in France :001_tongue::001_smile:

Great splitter by the way. We have the same model and it's a beast :thumbup1:

Bought my Thor from France at the end of last year, very easy to do and found a really good dealer. Splitter is great as well! Not sure about other makes but there is an importing agent for Thor who must be taking a big chunk as a middleman. I can understand importing agents for machine that need back up and service but for log splitters that could easily be looked after by individual dealers it seems a bit pointless and adds to price. I think the French agent was dealing with Thor direct, not 100% sure though.

We got a 16ton pto pump splitter on a 3 point linkage all galvanised with 2 side tables on it from Ireland at a reasonable price we are happy with it. Some of the ones from the big name uk suppliers are crazy prices! ImageUploadedByArbtalk1455460029.022659.jpg.62ce86131c28130060e9668f7f6e29c8.jpg

I paid 2650 Euros for it including VAT which is about £2000. If some one wants one let me know. Shipping one back to UK on a Pallet would cost about £150-200.

Supply your VAT number and you can buy without VAT. Of course you must declare it in your UK books.
