Hi.

Has anyone fitted the mulching kit to a Lawnflite HWS 553 (bought last year) at all as I bought one and after fiddling with it decided it wasn't great and took it off. There are spacers that are supposed to fit in the holes in the blades but they seem to only fit into one blade and the other could move if it hit an obstacle. The bolts supplied (30mm) are too long as far as I can tell and the 25mm ones are the wrong thread. All in all it looked really poor so I put the old blade back on.

If someone knows what I did wrong I'd appreciate some pointers as it looked rather dangerous to me the way it all fitted together (or rather didn't). Part is: 71902-218 and it doesn't mention Lawnflite *anywhere* in the instructions just Honda and Kawasaki.

I probably should have stopped when I didn't see Lawnflite on the instructions.

Thanks,

Hi

Thanks for that. Part number may be right but to me this thing looks dangerous given the spacers, the different bolt lengths and threads. I think I might just send it back and PX the mower for something else that has accessories that fit it.

It's a shame as it's a good mower but I don't have hours and hours to spend sorting out something that should take 15 minutes to fit and I need to be able to mulch with it, ideally without the possibility of blades rattling around or worse.

I actually nipped the original bolts up with the kit on and you can move the bottom blade back and forth until it hits the bolt as those spacers don't engage with it. They might when it's on the floor but then they are effectively rattling around in there due to the gap ..

I supplied a mulching kit with a Kaaz mower a few months ago, and just like you, I was not impressed with the fit, for the same reasons. I spoke to Danarm who seemed a bit oblivious to the issue and had apparently never had it reported before. (funny how I have so many 'firsts')

The mulch plug is also not simple to fit and remove, possibly OK if you want to convert the mower to mulch permanently, but useless for putting in and out as conditions and customers prevail.

It seems to me to very much an 'afterthought' rather than a pro-active design.

It really is a great shame to have such a poor accessory to such a brilliant mower.

I now never offer the mulch kit as an option.

If you do make some longer bushes, ensure that they are long enough to link both blades, but short enough to allow full tightening of the blades.

Hi

Well when the supplier I used rang them they said "we never heard of this before" :001_rolleyes: they did also suggest that the blades need to be in a crossed configuration (what were they smoking?).

I did make longer bushes and they worked well. The kit is a real bodge though and I think you're very wise not to sell them. It's a shame as I just tested it on a load of wet (very wet) matted leaves and after 2 passes I now have a green square with no sign of leaves surrounded by lots of leaves. It seems to mulch very well.

I wont be keeping it in this configuration though. I'll change it back and use it as a collector as it is excellent for that and despite the issues with this kit I can't bring myself to get rid of it. What I will do is go get a dedicated mulching mower .. maybe a Husqvarna, Sitga or a JD as they seem to be the main 3 worth looking at. Any suggestions welcome :001_smile:

I have a Lawnflite 21" roller as well that I never use anymore so will sell that to offset the mulching mower.

Regards,
