Loler needed for tipper truck?

HSE say tippers are exempt from LOLER. As work equipment they are likely to need an inspection but you could do that your self by following the manufacturers maintenance advice and just keep a diary of when you checked things.

Agreed ATS. We probably over maintain whether wiping down the ram, greasing & visual checking every couple of weeks as its our livelihood/neck at risk. Must say we don't keep a record though.

This is a new one on me as well , I read the HSE document and there are a few useful bits of info in there regarding tippers. One thing was the isolation switch for the electrics, I know at least one of our tippers has not got one so I had better get that done. As far as records go I suppose a simple homegrown dated tick box list would suffice and chuck it in with the vehicle maintenance records.

Keep the record keeping simple but definitely do it if you've lads working for you. Its definitely not a new thing. If you dont keep the records life is so much more difficult if theres an injury due to equipment failure- how do you prove you were doing the checks?

Its the same with weekly checks on climbing/rigging gear all should be documented on a simple check sheet. The same with ladders, saws, chipper etc. Once you've got the checks on a tick sheet shouldnt take more than 15 mins a week to run through a crews gear

Tipper bed no, tail lift yes. One's primary function is to lift the other to carry. I don't suppose your tipper has a tail lift? very rare to have both but i've seen an LDV once that did have, or maybe a swing lift crane?

Just to clarify it doesn't matter whether a lifting device pushes, pulls, whatever if its primary function is to lift or suspend then it's subject to loler (with a few exceptions, very few), a scissor lift MEWP works in the exact same way as many tipper mechanisms.
