radioactive logs

All this so far is a load of codswallop, show me where there are radioactive logs being imported...

I understand the ethical and financial implications, to uk log manufactures, and to the carbon neutral debate.

But branding, or associating imported logs with such drivel is industrial sabotage, and a most underhanded way of carrying on.

That in itself would raise my concerns as to a suppliers cedibility, as tgb says above...

Hi all,

Personally I consider it could present a problem. The radiation from fissle by products discharged following the explosion at Chernobyl in April 1986 contaminated a significant area, however there are a small number of peolple who have moved back into what became known as 'the dead zone' - probably too old to worry about the rad haz.

Whilst the more harmful Alpha emitters tend to have relatively short half lives & thus decay quickly, what remains is unfortunately going to be around for thousands of years.

Im fairly sure that border radiation monitoring should detect a load of contaminated wood & I would consider the danger is to those who cut & transport it.

Should detection fail then unfortunately, some poor soul could end up burning low lavel radioactive waste.

If people are willing to transport and sell such dubious things, I dare say there's other nefarious things they're willing to do, in order to get it done.

Perhaps, nicking the truck; not paying their workers; leaving this country with more goods of suspect origin, than was brought in. Just thoughts.

Radioactive logs come in, nicked chippers and chainsaws go out.

Two little mysteries sorted.:001_smile:

Good knows how these people make money shipping here. I can buy a piece of tat for 99p from China that take less than a week to get here and is delivered by royal mail who would charge me 3 times that price if I just wanted to post it from one UK post code to another! How does that work?:confused1:

It makes me wonder how it is economic to transport firewood from Eastern Europe to Britain anyway. Most of the journey is overland, by lorry.

Its dead simple and the key is scale.

The journey isn't overland, its by sea in huuuuuuge boats where the freight costs are less than a penny per ton mile.
