So I got a go pro style camera for Christmas and as it's my first cam I'm new to all this editing and what not. I have a laptop running windows 7 and have been having a play around with windows live movie maker but don't really know what I'm doing. Can't seem to get any good quality videos to watch. Played with the save setting and set up a custom one at 1920x1080 30fps and 130000kb bit rate but doesn't seem as good as I was expecting. What am I doing wrong? And is there a better program I could be using?

Thanks in advance

George

I am also not like that windows movie maker, easy to use but crappy picture quality. There is available manyfree editing software, please google and You find some easily, other solution is buy some software.

I am Linux user and My video editing program is Openshot, it is very easy to use and You can save Your video any quality You want.

You can find also Windows version on Openshot editor and here is to link, this is free software.

Do GoPros not come with their own software anymore? That allows basic editing and is fairly easy to use (think it's called GoPro suite?).

In regards to why the footage may not be looking a good as you have hoped, do you have protune selected on the GoPro? This will make the footage look a little grey and washed out before you colour balance it.

Regarding your settings, are you actually shooting at 1080p @ 30fps ? If you're only shooting at 720p then upscaling this could be the reason it doesn't look good as its doubling the size of the image and if its not the correct framerate it will either be adding or skipping frames.

Also 130000kb isn't needed for your export as the GoPro only records at about 45mbs so you're trying to add information that isn't there and will just be making your file size bigger for no reason.

Cheers for the insight but it isn't actually a go pro so didn't come with any software of any kind. I need to do some more vids really and do a bit more trial and error but I'll take into account what you said about bit rate and stick closer to standard. Yes it's recording in 1080p@30fps. One thing I couldn't understand is that I can't play the 2k/4kvids on my laptop, guess that's just down to age and hardware nor being up to the job.

Would a mac be better for this kind of thing or is windows fine with the right hardware and program

I use movie maker for editing the pics from my headcam. When it comes to saving them there are 4 options: youtube, high definition display, computer & email. The highest resolution is hd display at 1440 x 1080.

Personally I don't see any reason to go higher than the youtube setting at 640 x 480.Some of my vids can be seen here.

If you've got access to a mac, things will be better.

I make time-lapse films for the construction industry and use Final Cut Pro. Macs are the preferred tool for movie editing.

I used to export movie files for PC, but gave up and started to upload to Vimeo with a function for them to download as they pleased or stream straight from Vimeo.
