Could it be a dodgy chain ? Had a few issues with chain not spinning freely on new bar and has been down to damaged drive links.

never thought of that, chain looks fairly fresh but i'll try it on a different bar and see what happens.

This may be way off beam .. the chain is a 1.5mm wide drive link width isn't it ? If you happen to have a chain that fits Stihl (1.6mm) bars and it was part worn thus making it even wider at the bottom of the drive link it could be tight.

If you pop that worn and oversize chain on a new Husqvarna bar with paint in the rail groove then it could be even tighter. May explain the old Husqvarna bar working due to having a slightly worn rail slot. Iv had a saw in that was bit like that and found a 1.6mm chain on Husqvarna bar.
