Best tip is don't leave tools in the vehicle - ever, unattended. Thirty second to a minute with no-one on board is all it takes.

Also chain anything carried on the back, Ive of saws been grabbed by lads on scooters and even pedestrians at lights.

Would SmartWater be a deterrent.

Wouldn't of thought so. The only way I can see is a deterrent is to have it to hard to nick in the first place and make sure you got damn good insurance that covers everything (even on site and in transit).

I would of thought the sort of people who use this nicked stuff don't give 2 hoots if it's marked or got your postcode engraved all over it etc, or are sold to people who knows (that it's fell off the back of a lorry) paid the going rate for such gear, probably don't give a **** either. The chances of you or any other other professional arb guy ever seeing this gear is use is so so slim not to mention going over and checking it out for any tell tale marks.

make sure the police are on the case and pester them to take action if they are sitting on it - i had all my gear nicked, taxi driver spotted where they lived, police said yeah we know who it is, they went round a week later- DOH!
