Dark silver birch

Anybody know what has made this silver birch turn this colour. It's a shame really this has ended up in the firewood pile and not on the lathe but I'm quite restricted on storage space for blanks at the minute. I'd guess it's some sort of disease maybe

I was hoping maybe if I know what causes it I'd be able to watch out for any more and not log them up. Thanks mick
