building around existing trees

Its difficult to determine how the tree in each case will respond to the architecture built around it.

The simple answer is that it will respond badly to root severance, crushing and soil compaction. These are the exact things that 5837 says we are supposed to be avoiding

 

This is simply tree health, sacrificed to the architects hubris. It may be a neat feature for a short while but in the long term, and many cases the tree dies.

I see what your saying and agree, however if they are going to build on plots where trees are anyway it's nice to see them give trees the chance. In some of the cases the building will be easily changed if the tree does die or it will not matter.

On a different note I would hate to be the bloke who had to take the dead tree down that was growing through or around a building :-/.

Well I suppose but if having a tree integral to the building the best way would be to plant it into the building and allow the pair to acclimate. I have been the bloke who has to go back and fell the corpse on more occasions than I care to remember.

 

The point I was making was that the original title of this thread was

 

this is how it should be done.

 

which so isn't the case
