Might be an easy way to spike yourself/grate your spikes together? Have you tried a diy haas and just ditched the footloop, but attach croll etc to top of spike shank with a short loop? Still get a bit of separation then.

My diy haas is about 6 years old...its kicking around somewhere im sure

am i being thick? why do you need an accendor on spikes when you are walking up the tree anyway?

please be gentle im newish to climbing

Maybe the trees to be pollarded, allowing spikes to be worn around the limbs that are to be removed. You can also buy pruning spikes that can be worn in tree even if the tree is not to be removed/felled.

As well in my area we have large diameter trees, within the regulations we must follow we are attached from ground to returning to ground. Sometimes ascending the rope is faster than flipping a 18.5m flipline. Even using your lifeline as a flipline while after awhile your arms get really sore :)

But when your up there using your spikes are faster.

This has probably already been discussed, I don't recall....but I was thinking last night if it would be feasible to mount a second ascender at the top of the shank of your spike rather than using a haas for a second ascender. Anyone tried this?

Yes I did it early this year. I used JB Weld to fix a Pantin onto the top of the shank.

It works but is not what I hoped for.

It's nice and stable but the rope hangs down alongside the spike which is a bit dodgy, to say the least.

Last month the Pantin snapped off so I bought a Kiwi Klimber which is much better.
