i've made my first batch of blackberry whiskey today, should be ready the begining of november. there are masses of sloes this year, not quite ready for picking yet though. i used to make elderflower champagne as a kid, it was lovely.

 

 

 

Suppose to wait until the first frost to harvest Sloes.

although you can just split the skins before using.

 

 

Blackberry Whiskey, mmmmmm.........sounds like an interestingly worthwhile exercise.

 

Recipe please ?

My sister made a batch of that in old Pomagne bottles (remember that?). One night we heard a loud bang, closely followed by another. Dad thought the gas had gone off, but yes, you guessed it, it was sisters Elderflower Champagne.

After gingerly removing the remaining bottles, she had a second attempt and this time actually measured the ingredients out properly! She's recently decided to try again after a 20-odd year gap. As you say though, its real 'fightable' stuff!:laugh1:

 

Did the elderflower champagne for the first time this year,was strongly advised to use plastic "lemonade" type bottles rather than glass,I was a little sceptical about this seeing how thin they are,but after bottling it off it was recommended to relieve the pressure every other day - absolutely astounding amount of pressure for weeks afterwards even when doing this,bet yours did go with a bang!

Birch sap wine is great. You can get about a gallon of sap of one tree. Got to wait until April for that though.

 

Think I'll have a go at that next year:thumbup1:

 

The reason for picking sloes after the first frost's is to ensure that they are fully ripe, apparently. Although had a bit of a read and some are getting ripe now, think I may do some foraging at the weekend :001_smile:
