best tree id app?

Hiya!

 

I'm getting a few jobs where I'm going to have to apply for planning concent due to tpo's etc. I'm the first to admit (and opening myself up for a ribbing/slating) but my tree id isn't the best in the world so was wondering if anyone uses Tree I'd app's and if so what's the best one out there? I would like to be reassured that I'm identifying the correct species of tree before I submit any applications, if using an app seems "unprofessional" to seasoned arbourists then that's cool but in my situation I feel it's a good solution and should hopefully save me some grief! We all have to start somewhere.....!

I have the Trees of Britain app for Android. With a TPO 's the trees position and name should be already clear and the owner should have a copy or you can request to see one; some are now online.

I would hazard a guess that you will be unlucky to get something real unusual, the same ten or so Genera will keep cropping up.That said you need to become very observant re twigs, leaves,flowers, seeds,buds and bark.Take samples or photos or both and then to avoid embarrassment check with the app and Google.

You don't need an app.

If it's got needles it's a conny.

If it hasn't and you don't know what it is, it's a Hornbeam.

If it's got no leaves or needles, it's dead. Or a utility pole. Or maybe winter.

The rest is just common sense.

I use one simply called 'tree I'd - British tree identification' app on the iPhone. It allows you to search on size, bark type, leaf type, and all manner of variables, then gives you the results with a percentage chance of it being the actual tree you're looking at. It's really helped to improve my knowledge and I'd-ability of trees. Even has hornbeam on there!

I use a combination of 'Tree ID - British tree identification' and 'Trees of Britain' to increase my skills.

 

That said, a good book is hard to beat.
