I've been reading the forum for a while now & I appreciate that you're all professionals that do this for a living.

People consider rock climbing as a hobby or sport, why not tree climbing?I always loved climbing trees as a child & have recently rekindled that interest.

The reaction from family though is,"Are you mad?" "Don't you think you're a bit old for that?" I have all the necessary safety equipment & am competent in it's use.

I'm sure if I'd taken up rock climbing, the reaction would have been different.

Why is there such a distinction between the two?

I love going for a reccy climb when I get the chance... Without the pressure of trying to get the job done and without wielding a chainsaw you can appreciate the views and the tree itself.. I went up a big Ash the other day and was just sat at the top with my electric fag taking in the sunset over suburbia.

I do it as a hobby. Just started and I'm 41. Certainly gets the heart going and that's not just from the climb!

Couldn't agree more about the heart rate, not sure if it's a good thing at the minute.I'm 60 with high blood pressure!

.. sat at the top ... taking in the sunset over suburbia.

That's what it's about.:thumbup1:

...Who gives a toss wot anyone thinks-if you enjoy it do it.

That's always been my philosophy.Unfortunately the law thought otherwise.:laugh1:

Spot on.

I should recy climb more often.

Can't argue with that.

I've got my kids and wife into climbing just for the fun of it. My youngest was prussiking and hip-thrusting at only 4 years old (at the time).

TBH, I do more fun climbs with the family nowadays, rather then professionally. As said above - who cares what whoever thinks.

I love rec tree climbing and always give my gf and other friends a go if they'd like to try. They describe it as a mental and physical workout and I couldn't agree more. I would like to try rock climbing or even alpine climbing one day but I trust trees more than rock..
