Going to test drive a Hilux

The 2.5 had 2 possible power variants, 102 and 143bhp iirc

They're seriously solid trucks though, one of the local company's had a hilux and navara new, navara lasted 2 years with a heap of problems, hilux 8 without problem, replaced with 2 new ones

I looked at the older ones before buying new, twice the price of same age navaras etc but with good reason IMO

This only my opinion based on ownership. The hilux is head and shoulders above the rest and worth the money especially second hand. The mk 5 was twice the truck of anything else at the time. The new 2.5 has nearly the same feel power wise when driven and according to the test reports you don't need the 3 litre. But if you are towing especially if you are pushing the limits buy the 3 litre.

 

The only thing that lets the hilux down is the official towing limits but it tows as well as any of the others.

 

If you buy a hilux they had engine problems around 2008 make sure the injector seals were done and the engine was not oil starved I think there was a few injector problems and they are hundreds of pounds each. Other than that the d4d engines are bullet proof and economical.

 

If I had six makes of double cab lined up from different makes the rest were £300 the hilux was £2000 I would buy the hilux.

 

The Amarok is a better pick up but nobody knows how the 2 ltr engine will survive and a decent spec is pushing £35,000

For what its worth, a mate with a machinery dealership has an amorak and has no end of gearbox problems due to towing.

 

The new (at least this years) hilux can be uprated to tow 3.5tonnes, the dealer quoted me about 2.5k to do so.

I still have contact with the VW garage I did my apprentership in and they say all the manual gearboxes in the amaroks are causing problems, I noticed network rail are using them now also so they will get a good work out and test working for them.

Working with a commercial fencing company today on a site and they had 2 hilux invincibles on site, 3ltr engine and unrated towing capacity to 3.5 tonnes, a company called Cheshire Contracting 01925 768897 did the work, the cost is £900 per vehicle and can be retro done on certain older models too.
