Truck and person wanted subbie basis

We all do things our own way, rightly or wrongly, I couldnt give 2 hoots how others do a job. I've worked with some darned fine companies with all the big kit, the finance, the stress, and I made a conscious decision not to go down that route. I make no pretence of the fact that if I need a specialist in a particular field ie Lee or Steve, then that service will be hired in, in their own right. Less professional, maybe, but honest.

Some of the biggest construction companies in the uk sub out every single aspect of a project and don't own any machinery etc. As Buzz states a company would never grow if it did'nt advertise or market a service with out owning the gear.

I can not see a problem even if it was to the point where a company subbed a saw man, a chipper and operator and a chip disposal method such as an ag trailer as long as a quality job is undertook and the client is happy.

well well well, i have missed all this. it isnt like me, i am like a fly round you know what...if i could get a good local crew to do all my work safely and to a high standard then i would, a simple contract stating does and donts, and away you go. i used to do EVERYTHING myself, and sometimes knowing every in or out if a job is a hinderence. now if i give instruction to my lad with the 4x4, trailer his own insurance and more importantly common sense a job then he goes and does it, if the jockey wheel breaks on the trailer, he gets a puncture or is stopped by the police, i dont care, it is his problem. so if i dont have to worry about all that crap then its great. Does richard branson empty the bins on his planes and trains, no he does not. he owns over 900 companies and works 2 hrs a day. genius. A customer is paying us for doing a job, if we want the glory of doing it then that is fine, if we want to make money then get someone else to drag the crap throught the gardens get soaked to the skin and have a sore back. I used to want my gravestone to read' stevie blair tree cutter extrordinaire' i was a headcase, i would run about all day, filling saws, climbing trees, wouldnt let anyone even start the chipper, none of my groundies used a saw. i would cut everything tiny ot whack off a big bit, bounce down the tree, sned it out and prussick back up. i was knackered all the time and a stressed out wreck..now i can hardly walk in the morning, it takes me an hour to get going my back is that sore. i have just been to the door and paid my lad, he did over 50 miles yesteday, back and forth. towing a 2.5 ton chipper and his trailer, he drove the loader and worked a saw and fed the chipper, went over the job with the customer and gave me a big cheque, so i have just paid him. i wont need him till tomorrow night . he will turn up with my chipper, we will blast the stuff through it and then he will just take it away and put it back for me. job done. and ps i now want my gravestone to read ' papa':001_smile:

I agree with all of the above. Sub-contracting out work is fine. And companies need to do this to expand and grow.

A self employed groundie on a day rate is not a sub-contractor. (The word subbie is misused regularly) and they do not need PLI.

I stand by what I've been sayign that wanting a self employed person to come in for 8 hrs onsite per day with PLI and remove all of soemoene elses waste AND do groundie work for them is asking rather lot.

If the company in this instance finds someone then good for them. I have no problem with what anyone else does but I have an opinion thats worth discussing.

I am suggesting that this thread be moved to off topic so that the original poster can make a new request for help, and non members won't be put off by my rantings. It was never an intention to dis credit an individual for their working methods, each to there own.

Thats ME Stevie!! But it works for me

I don't get let down, if my groundy quits I can get another (although my current lad is ACE and I pay him well to keep him)

I want my grave stone to read "Tree cutter extraordinare and family provider"

rupe i hold your opinion very highly, i have changed my views on the job just by some of your posts and comments, hell i was srt' ing with surf boy john on satuarday. and my kit bag is overflowing. it used to just have a harness, rope and spikes in it, and maybe even a strop. lol this place is for discussing, i found that out very early on and once i understood that i have got on just fine. it is easy to think as our own ways as gospil. but i always reflect on converations or disagreements and come out more knowledgeable, thanks to everyones input. it staggers me that there is so many members and so little posters. think what they could bring to the conversation. come on you guys, speak up:001_smile:

I think you are probably a better business man and man manager than I will ever be.

I just stick to the stuff I CAN do :001_smile:

i am still trying to sort out my mess from previous years dave, i just want have more strings to my bow. i am on an adventure dave, and i am loving it, meeting new people making new friends and trying new things. at heart i am a tree cutter through and through, but i know there is something missing or something else i should be doing, what it is i do not know but everyday i find another reason to get out of bed a bit quicker. i want to help folk as much as i can, and recently i have been rewarded by some of my comments on here, i had a few guys come up to me at the show and introduce themselves and thank me for giving them a few tips and advice, it felt great and very rewarding. but i am sure a few have my head on a dartboard:scared1::001_tt1:
