Thank you Andy,

the day rate i would expect from someone who is set up with the van would include thier labour on site as they would act as crew with me, a price per load, Milage allowance of 50p per mile, i would expect the first 40 miles of travel to be included in the day rate. The reason I ask for PLI and a Carriers license is I only work with the proper paperwork in place and expect the same for any subbie work. BTW I sub to other people to and can supply all the proper insurances and tickets as well as 4x4 pick up.

Rupe,

As I understand it the dumping of your waste at your yard is illegal unless it is a licensed waste site. I have had this with the EA and woodchip is classed as waste so needs to go to a proper waste site. Also to burn at your yard you need to stipulate this on your carriers license and the restrictions are silly. So maybe it could be you that is not doing things correct and undercutting peeps by effectively flytipping!!:scared1:

If contractor A. has a client base, but the occasional need for specialised services, then he is using his discretion to hire in contractor B. to deal with those services. A lot of my business is of his nature, as I have the equipment to clear large volumes quickly.

Where the line starts getting blurred, is when Contractor A. starts advertising and marketing those services, when he can only provide them through a subcontractor. He may end up in a conflict of interest with contractor B. if they both tender for the same job...

I was merely using Petes set-up as an example, and I think its a good move for him. I have used skips, chipped on site etc to avoid removal where necessary in order to get the job done as efficiently as possible, not to under-cut the competition , and where this is the case it is clearly quoted for, so the clients can see what they are getting for their money. Does this make me any less professional at what I do, the way I do it? So long as the clients are happy in every way, and pay me for a good service, then I can live with that.:001_smile:

Are you after someone on day rate or as a subcontractor? You can't have both?

As stated by Lee earlier, a day rate self employed person does not need PLI. I just think your asking a lot. Someone could come along with a truck and remove your waste but to be there all day helping you with groundie work is a big request especially as you imply that you would be doing someone a favour by giving them the work.

I think you should be extremely grateful to whoever helps you out with this.

I have not accused you of doing anything wrong or illegal so don't point accusations at me.

I'm entitled to throw toys etc. thats what a forum is for sometimes. I actually don't care what other people get up to, doesn't mean I'm not goign to stick my oar in every now and then. The PLI thing is an issue that needs resolving, I think there is another thread on it soemwhere, not sure how its going though.

I'm saving up for a bigger horse!

Do you have adequate insurance to cover contactors? I mean a man with a van [actualy truck] is unlikely to have insurance covering chainsaw use. I've employed self employed climbers and groundsman in the past whether they had insurance was of no concern to me, qualifications were priority to me. My insurance covered them, it was my legal obligation ..

Are you actually after a groundsman with a truck? your original post was unclear

Nothing wrong with hiring-in kit and labour, imo. I worked for a tree firm in Sydney years ago. The company would have been turning over at least £200,000 worth of Aussie dollars. The firm consisted of an ex-climber boss, a small pick-up and a mobile phone. No truck, no chipper and no saws. Subbie climbers, subcontractor firms that only chipped roadside brash and a handful of backpackers. Getting a steady stream of good paying customers is where the money will always be. I`m not sure about the skips though.
