No I've got another 18yrs to go. I dont think I'll ever stop working though, just want something a little easier, stay in the game and not work for anyone else.

Its definately do able but I would imagine it will cost alot to get going.

 

There is a guy round here that started doing this about 18 months ago, he splits and sells some timber but mainly grinds brash and log and sells it for biofuel.

 

Everytime I speak to him he has had to buy more machinery to make it work and he had an awful lot to start with.

 

Because he charges for timber drop off's we only take the stuff that is half rotted or a bit of a pain to split ourselves etc.

I am in the process of trying to do exactly the same a Mick, we have been offered a disused 3 acre poultry farm covered in rundown buildings. Went to the local planners for a chat about my plans for change of use to a woodyard, and was told no:cursing:

Their concerns were the roads surrounding the site would be unable to support the increased traffic- im of the opinion that as it is already registered for agricultural use they cannot stop me, am i right or wrong?

Im not sure youd get too much of the good wood. Most people i no either do logs or sell the wood to people that do.

 

How much money are you hoping to make from it?

Arbaholic: Eventually after a slow transition I would like to earn all running costs and a decent wage. Your local, how much you paying per load at the mo?

I dont buy any fire wood so Im not sure how much people are asking for it at the mo. I have known full transits to be sold un-cut and split for £60.00. Other people give the wood away for nothing to somenone who collects it so it varys.

 

I think it would be tough too make that much from the wood and chippings alone as I think the good wood will go elsewhere. Unless your thinking about paying for the wood to encourage people to give it to you?
