Confused little nymphs

How odd that our friend here (Polyporus squamosus) has been given a common name that would appear to have derived from the Greek for Tree Nymphs, specifically those that associate with the mighty Oak.

Can't say I've ever seen Dryads saddle fruiting on Oak before, normally associated with Maples, Ash, Beech & Elm.

Anyone seen it on Oak?

Here's a few impressive bracket clusters I saw last week up in and around Norfolk

How long before the oak falls over the decking and/ or the house??

Slack ma girdle

i can spot a tree at 100 yards

The first shots are on an Ash, next to the entrance of a Zoo.

Appologies if my wording didn't make the lack of Dryads on Oak, the point of the thread.

The site appears to be within a program of inspection, but I noted it does have a few decay issues which I intend to notify the owners on.

monkey, how odd that you have made the same observation for this fungi's common name!

I reckon somewhere along the line this got transfered in culture from inonotus dryadeus, a point I put to a representative of the BMS, they found the comment "interesting"

Like you say, dryads are mainly associated with the oak, in greek mythology, where the name dryad comes from, so why has this fungus, which you definatley couldnt sit on! got the name? You can sit and Ive even stood on a dryadeus bracket!

I suggest like you, that Inonotus dryadeus is the REAL dryads saddle.

you know what they say monkey, "great minds think alike!"

Not sure where to have sneeked this in, but it's so good, I didn't want it lost in one of those longwinded & multi paged threads.

I didn't take this myself, it was e-mailed to me this morning by Helen Read, who said that they were stumped a little before it started emerging, and got TG to aid with the Id.

What a fine eruption! :thumbup1:
