We always called it 'blazing' and ran saw firmly down the side while snedding, no secret!😀

 

Doe this help in any way if your splitting into billets straight after felling?

No, birch bark is a like a sealed plastic bag, locking moisture in (which is why birch bark canoes are so water resistant) so if your turning into billets your splitting the bag open, so no need to blaze. 😀

As for stringyness I find each tree different, edge trees being the worst and spiralled.

 

I've noticed that if split within say 1-2 hrs of being felled that it pops open like sycamore, and left for any time longer and it becomes stringy and a tad more irritating. Although as you point out, each birch tree seems to have different properties.
