Well, I wouldn't want to do it but it is a method we use to kill stumps and a customer asked me if it would also work on a tree, which got me to wondering. If it wouldn't work, why not?

No it wouldn't.

Why would you want to do this, other then to illegally kill someone else's tree?

Might you want to create standing dead timber within a woodland as part of some grant scheme.

or, to kill a species that suckers profusely before felling the tree.

And, I'd answer yes, I know of a sycamore that died soon after an adjacent stump was treated with glyphosate. (within a month) although from what I was told application rates were greatly exceeded.

Just legally dismantle the bugger or had it got a TPO on it & 'client' trying to be clever - warn em of consequences if so & if no TPO give em quote for takedown.
