chain tension

Hi all, i have a Ryobi 4450 which has developed a problem, whilst plunge cutting the chain came to a halt and after checking it was so tight that it wouldn't turn, i have tried re tensioning the chain and no matter how loose i have it as soon as i disengage the brake and give it some revs it immediately tightens up and stops again, anyone got any ideas "apart from get rid" cheers for now Peter.

Sounds like it's not oiling. Check the oil hole on the bar is clear and that oil is coming out when reving the saw

Usually goes slack when not oiling as it stretches . Have you tried tensioning without the brake on ? you may have a " tight spot " where the chain has stretched but not evenly .

Cheers mate, first thing i did was clean the bar groove and oil holes and filed the top and bottom of the bar, tensioned it with brake on and off, didn't think to check oil flow when reving, i'll check that, thanks a lot mate, cheers for now Peter.

One thing that can happen is if you slacken the side cover off too much the location spigot for the bar is engaged only on the taper . Yoy adjust then tighten the side cover , more of the taper engages with the bar pushing it forward and tensioning it a bit more.

If you've checked the bar groove hasn't pinched anywhere and the chain is oiling it must be what Stubby is saying, make sure you are lifting the tip of the bar when you tighten the nuts on the side.

Are you saying that the brake is on, when you adjust the chain tension?

Have you checked the sprocket at the end of the bar isn't knackered?

...or the drive sprocket worn out, or the chain the wrong pitch for the sprockets?

Well i thank all you lads for your help and guidance and yes it was oil related, there was very little getting to the chain but i was using a great deal of oil, after doing what i was advised running the saw without the bar etc' i noticed no oil coming from the feed but was dripping from the bottom of the saw, in fact after taking out the worm gear for a look the oil pipe had actually came off the top end of the pump, tried running it and it seems fine now but haven't actually cut with it yet, thanks once again to you guys, much appreciated, cheers for now Pete.
