261 not ticking over

Normally with the sprocket problem it's hard to start/keep running with chain break on.

Take side cover, bar and chain off and see how play there is. If there is a lot take it to your local Stihl dealer and get a FOC rebuild!

Mine have been doing this from new, they make an EEK!! Noise and stop, they then need choked to start, usually a 1 handed yo yo with finger on the trigger!!!

We had lots of problems with this.

There is manufacturing problem with the sprockets.

In fairness to Stihl they replaced outs under warranty even when they have been over a year old. If it's worn the crank they have replaced those too.

 

 

This is a bit of a worry and here I am considering lashing out the hard earned on either a 261cm or 362cm. The words clutch, crank and rebuild sound expensive normally . If the dealer doesn't stand over it are we talking big money?

Are these issues specific to the 261 or are these general stihl issues

Only had problems with 261s.

We run whole range of Stihl saws.

Not been a massive problem to be honesty just an inconvenience and some thing to keep an eye out for.

I have a 261 and I'm planning on doing an annual clutch bearing swop (£10), will this cover the uncertainty of this issue or do I need to do anything else?

Just put a finger each side of the sprocket and if you can wobble it ,change it too.

Yup, a bad bearing can knock the sprocket out so if there is play with a new bearing, change the sprocket as well.

Sprocket bearing was good, so left that out. Decided to have a tinker with the LA. Seems to have done the trick.

Took mine into dealer today, referred to stihl they said they would fit different sprocket to cure the problem
