261 not ticking over

First time its ever acted up, 3 years old - occasional use.

Air filter clean, always clean, fresh mix. Maybe fuel filter needs changing?

Yes, filter is the 1st suspect. And new spark plug after that.

Make sure the clutch bearing is ok, if it has gone, it may be causing friction on the crank stopping it idling properly!

 

Other than that, check the fuel system and carb settings, just mention the clutch bearing as that is the usual issue with this saw!

Mine started to suddenly stop when left idling for a bit , not always but gradually increased in frequency.

It was the known problem of bearing and sprocket wear. Actually my bearing was Ok , it was the sprocket.

Mine does that and it's only about 6 months old? Surely can't have worn bearings etc yet?

We had lots of problems with this.

There is manufacturing problem with the sprockets.

In fairness to Stihl they replaced outs under warranty even when they have been over a year old. If it's worn the crank they have replaced those too.

Haven't looked into this yet - but forgot to mention that once the saw had stalled, its quite hard to fire back up again, usually requiring the half throttle setting.
