Chainsaw Oil Options

Hi All,

 

New here. I've got a job first thing tomorrow and realised I've not picked up any chainsaw oil - completely dry. Will struggle to get some tomorrow.

 

I've heard some people use veg oil but don't really want to risk it. I have a decent bottle of mountain bike chain oil. Will a little of that be ok for an hour or so's sawing tomorrow? Any risk associated?

Prob not useful if your in the Peaks but if you desperate Screwfix and B&Q open at 7am about £6 per litre

Veg oil is fine I use it all the time so does my colleague we have done for 2 years with no problems with bar or sprocket ware, the only thing with it is it does go sticky if you leave it but on a every day saw that's no problem just running some mineral through before putting the saw away for a long period, months, weeks is fine my backup saws are on it with no problems.

I've never seen cheap engine oil in a local garage!

Asda used to sell a gallon of oil for £5, don't know if they still do.

Veg oil won't hurt for an hours sawing, make sure you don't leave it sitting with veg oil in for too long after else it'll gum up the pump

Been using rapeseed for years, in all manner of weather, in saws that sit and saws that work. Never gummed anything up. ALways worked just fine.

The joys of living in France - chain oil available in the local supermarket at 9 euros for five litres! Maybe add some to your shopping list if you're doing a booze cruise this summer!
